A little History

(based from what I read in WIKIPEDIA note: i have no factual basis on what I write, everybody can edit the wikipedia, i just don’t have any source, sorry if some parts here are not true..)

The former 97.1 Campus-WLSFM was reformatted into 97.1 Baranggay  LS Forever on February 14 2007 (valentine’s Day whaaaaaattt…?!??!??). The reason behind the reformatting is to obtain more audiences (or as a MASA station). The format of the new FM station can be compared to 90.7 Love radio (with popular DJ’s like Nicolehiyala, Christsuper, Sexyterry), WRR 101.9 For life (ABS-CBN as the mother station), 91.5 Energy Fm Pangga ( as far as I know, the No. 1 FM station in Manila so far), Yes Fm Pwede! 101.1 and many more.

The new station still doesn’t reach its target audiences despite the fact that they have college students and young urban listeners. Because of this, Mr Enriquez persuaded the upper management to shift the current staion into more “masa” format. The Brgy. Ls has not yet regain its lost because the advertisers had switch into other competing FM stations.

A major change happened for the station. From the english-only DJ’s are  now using tagalog as their language and also for timechecks, from pop and rock songs, now added the OPM and novelty songs., jokes are also included and became staple in Baranggay LS format.

The cooperation of the mother station was seen, like live streaming for special events (i.e. S-Files, Starstruck Final Judgement etc.)

The station launched its new tagline–AYOS! which is also used in other Campus Radio stations on January 16,2008. On the same day the current DJs and staffs were dismissed by Mike Enriquez and replaced by the DJs from RGMA provincial stations. It’s sad to know, after a long loyal service and improving ratings, they’re still ignored. The RGMA has been secretly preparing new staffs, management and DJs for new reformatted (again) Brgy. Ls station. It was announced that the former team would no longer be on air and placed the new mangement. With the new Brgy. Ls, Mr. Enriquez has promised that they’ll be no. 1 Masa station in the mid-2008.

With the new station, a total change was made. The DJs have their Papa/mama tags in their name (exception for Ate Liza).

On february 4, 2008, a new program was launched entitled TALK TO PAPA (Kung may problema ka, i-talk to papa na). the program has somewhat sexually explicit content (but changing words or giving codes to them i.e. bedminton) and really not suitable for kids.

On April 2008, a new Brgy. Ls theme song was aired and a commercial was seen on tv.

Unfortunately, the new Brgy Ls ratings suffered. From #4 overall on Dec. 2007 dropped to # 6 overall in March 2008.

A petition was made to bring back the 1st version Campus Radio.

Why did 97.1 WLSFM have to reformat? It was already okay to begin with!

1) CAMPUS RADIO –> it’s the only one in town!

2) TARGET MARKET –> the target market may not be the masa, but there are still a lot of kids and adults out there who love listening to this station because of its pop tunes/recognizable songs!

3) SELL OUT –> do they really think the people are going to bite into this drastic change? THERE ARE ALREADY A LOT OF MASA STATIONS OUT THERE! Why reformat to CONFORM?! Why not build on what they already have and STAND OUT?

4) WASTE OF TALENT –> We all pity John Hendrix and all the other DJs who were forced to (a) change their names to something like “Johnny Baby”, (b) crack BADUY jokes like they actually mean them, (c) speak in carabao English.

5) NO MORE –> “It’s time to listen up, it’s time to listen in!”; “Front and center on front dot center!”; “Other People’s Music” (BEST PROGRAM EVER!); Rock-It Launcher, etc.

My opinion…

… actually I’m not an avid radio listener but after I’ve heard the Brgy. LS Ayos!, my gosh,, I became addicted to it.

… it started when my brother opened the radio, maybe around 10:00 pm, we’ve heard unstoppable laugh from the DJ and the caller. I heard the Dj saying… “wag ka na, sasagot ka pa!…” (something like that)

… Surprisingly, I also laugh with the simple jokes especially the interpretation of the caller’s dream.

… After that incident, I started to listen to the FM station and I haven’t notice that I became addicted to it.

… It also helps me because I minimized watching television and maximized listening to radio and my electric bill decreases (hahahahahahah)

… What I reallly like about this is that I laugh with simple jokes and everyday I always have my smile.

… But what I hate about it is that people see me as a crazy person because I laugh alone whenever I used my headset.

.. they’re so nice to the callers and texter and they really make their listeners happy…

… For me, it’s really a MASA station…

… Why don’t you try guys to tune up to 97.1 Brgy. LSFM Ayos! and you be the judge.
